Data collected
HamBuzzer works without signing up. If you play as a guest (default mode), we store:
- The nickname you choose (host or player).
- A random identifier (UUID) used as a "key" to resume your game.
- Game actions: buzzes, scores, questions typed.
- A technical session cookie and a language cookie, strictly necessary for the game to work.
In guest mode, no email, no password, no identifying personal data is collected. If you choose to create an account (optional), we additionally store your username and your email — see the "User account" section below.
User account (optional)
You can choose to create a HamBuzzer account to keep your host game history, stats and config. The account is fully optional — all core features work without it.
If you create an account, we store:
- Your username (editable in /profile).
- Your email address (editable in /profile).
- Your password as a bcrypt hash — the plaintext is never stored or transmitted after input.
- Your IP address, kept in Laravel's technical sessions table as long as you stay signed in.
Used for: authentication, linking your host games to your account, sending you the password reset link if you forget your password.
Password reset emails are sent via SMTP2GO, a sub-processor under GDPR (art. 28). Your email is used solely for this purpose.
If you tick "Remember me" at login, an additional cookie (remember_web_*, 5-year lifetime) is set to keep you signed in across sessions. It's explicit and optional — uncheck the box if you don't want it.
You can delete your account at any time from /profile → "Delete my account". Deletion is permanent and immediate: your username, email and password hash are erased. Games you've hosted stay in global stats but are detached from your account (host_user_id set back to NULL).
You can export all data associated with your account at any time from /profile → "Export my data". The download is a JSON file containing your profile and your list of host games.
Contact form
When you use the contact form, we collect your message, and optionally your nickname and email (only if you provide them). We also store the active language and the browser's user-agent, so we can reply in the right language and investigate device-specific bugs. This information is used only to reply to you and improve the site: no marketing, no sharing with third parties. Retention: 12 months maximum, then automatic deletion. You can request immediate deletion at any time via the same form.
Cookies and analytics
Strictly necessary cookies
Without them, the game doesn't work. No consent required (CNIL, art. 82). Specifically: a Laravel session cookie (laravel_session, XSRF-TOKEN) that keeps your current game and, if you have an account, keeps you signed in, plus a cookie to remember your language. Some info also stays in your browser's localStorage (recent games, appearance). That data stays with you.
Audience measurement (Plausible)
To understand how HamBuzzer is used (how many visitors, which pages, which languages), we use Plausible Analytics, a privacy-friendly tool hosted in the European Union. Plausible sets no cookies and collects no personal data: nothing identifies you, there's no cross-site tracking, and no data is sold or shared. That's why this measurement needs no consent and there's no cookie banner.
Retention period
Game data (rounds, buzzes, scores) is automatically deleted after 3 months. Game codes may stay longer for anonymous statistics. User accounts are kept as long as they exist: when deleted, associated games remain in global stats but are detached from the account. Messages sent via the contact form (and the associated email, if provided) are kept for a maximum of 12 months, then deleted.
Your rights (GDPR)
Your data can be deleted or exported at any time. For anonymous games: use the "×" button next to the game on the home page. For your account: "Delete my account" and "Export my data" are available in /profile. For any other request (access, rectification, objection), contact us via the contact form.
